So, what’s the deal with the Dealer? A Poker Dealer has an important role, aside from the obvious “dealing” of the cards. He or she must also keep track of the bets and help to control the tempo of the game. A good dealer keeps things moving and diplomatically encourages action from slower players.
A Poker Dealer must be very proficient in shuffling & dealing. However, it’s not as simple as it looks! Here are the correct methods:
To shuffle the cards, the dealer follows a specific sequence that’s typically defined by the casino:
- Spread all cards out on the table and push them around randomly. (This is called scrambling or washing the cards.)
- Collect the cards and square them into a deck. At this point a typical shuffling sequence might be: “riffle, riffle, box, riffle”. Professional dealers always keep both halves of the deck very low to the table while shuffling.
- Place one of the cut cards on the table then cut the deck onto the card.
- The cut card is held on the bottom of the deck for the entire hand, to keep the bottom card from being exposed.
In American-style dealing, the deck is held in one hand. The three card poker dealer pinches the front-right corner of the top card between the other thumb and index finger. The card is then thrown, or pitched to the player.
To keep your moves smooth and seamless as a Dealer, you must throw the card using a wrist extending motion. This positioning of the throwing wrist is critical, since the cards must be kept low and level with the table surface. This is done so that players at the table can’t see the undersides of the cards.
